The Kamala Harris Campaign Is Embracing the Memes

“kamala IS brat,” the British pop star Charli XCX posted on X just hours after U.S. President Joe Biden withdrew as the Democratic nominee and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the party against former President Donald Trump for the country’s vote in November. Read More: Why Joe Biden Stepped Down For some, the “brat” tweet could appear cryptic or confusing. For Gen Z—and increasingly, the Kamala Harris campaign itself and the Democratic Party, too—the message couldn’t be more clear: Harris is the meme candidate. [Read More]

The True Story Behind Peacock's A Friend of the Family

It’s 2:30 on a beautiful fall day. Sitting on my porch surrounded by rose bushes, newly in bloom, I am setting up an eye exam when the receptionist on the other end blurts out, “You’re the Jan Broberg with the new series, right?” I reply, “Yes, that’s me, A Friend of the Family starts streaming on Peacock October 6th.” She continues, “So do you remember, you came to my high school English class over 20 years ago, and told your story? U.S. Plastic Recycling Rates Are Even Worse Than We Thought

It’s well established that the state of U.S. plastics recycling is dismal. But plastic waste experts, who have long cautioned that the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) purported recycling rate was overestimated, now say that the country is poised for a reckoning. In 2018, the last time the agency analyzed where the nation’s trash ends up, the plastics recycling rate came in at about 9%, meaning that more than 91% of plastics generated that year were put in a landfill or incinerated for energy. Wendell Pierce: The First Time My Dad Gave Me 'The Talk'

After work, my dad always settled into that chair, opened a Budweiser and watched Walter Cronkite on the “CBS Evening News.” It was in this chair that he sat on April 4, 1968, the day the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It was the first time I ever saw my father cry. In 1974, when the city of Boston was desegregating its schools, I watched the news with my dad and saw the police escorts in riot gear, the protesters screaming at the buses, small frightened faces in their windows. What It Feels Like to Fight a Wildfire

I’ve been a firefighter in California for 24 years. I started my career up north where wildfires like the ones now burning in Carlsbad in San Diego County are not uncommon. As more people have moved into interface areas — where the edges of forests and grasslands meet urban sprawl — wildfires have gotten more dangerous. Before, fires used to just burn and die out in the wilderness. Now many homes simply become kindling. [Read More]

What to Know About Hillbilly Elegy Before Watching the Movie

In 2016, J.D. Vance published his memoir Hillbilly Elegy to unexpected commercial success. The book, as much an intricate reflection on white working-class Americans as a personal history, became a controversial hit among Democrats and Republicans alike in the months leading up to and after the election of Donald Trump. It’s little wonder that such a successful book would yield a movie adaptation: after Ron Howard’s production company scooped up the film rights in 2017, Netflix won a bidding war to finance the movie in a $45 million deal. Whole Foods Cuts 1,500 Jobs As Part Of Plan To Lower Prices

Whole Foods Market said Monday it will cut roughly 1,500 jobs, or about 1.6% of its workforce, over the next two months. In a statement, the upscale grocery store chain described the layoffs as being “part of its ongoing commitment to lower prices for its customers and invest in technology upgrades while improving its cost structure.” Many of the cuts will likely take place through “natural attrition,” the company said, adding that some of those laid off workers could eventually find new jobs within the company, which has 2,000 open positions and more than 100 new stores in some stage of development.
