A 'Parade of Planets' Is Coming. Here's How to Watch This Sky Show

One of the solar system’s most fortuitous conga lines occurred in the late 1970s, when the four gas giants—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—formed a neat cosmic column, allowing the Voyager spacecraft to make flybys of all of them. The twin ships performed dazzling science, returning some of the best pictures ever taken of the worlds and discovering moons and rings never before seen. Things won’t be quite as history-making on June 3, 2024, but they will be eye-popping all the same. [Read More]

Blake Crouch on New Book 'Upgrade' and Future of Sci-Fi

In 2019, Blake Crouch published Recursion, a sci-fi thriller about a neurological disease that inflicts memories upon people of lives that are not their own. Before that, he introduced readers to a physics professor who is kidnapped and then catapulted into alternate universes in his 2016 novel Dark Matter. Both books bring to life the type of technology that, in imagined worlds, would have the capability to change humankind. So when Crouch set out to write about the very real genetic modification technology CRISPR, he knew it would be a different prospect. [Read More]

Can Whites Say the N-Word?

Illustration by Alexander Ho for TIME We are stepping into deeply emotional territory here. No word in the American lexicon has the emotional force of nigger and yet its colloquial use grows as some young whites (and some Latinos and some Asians) believe it’s as innocuous as they decide it is. Words evolve but there is no new consensus on what nigga and nigger mean in the way the word gay turned in the 20th century from meaning happy to homosexual. [Read More]

Cardi B Described Her Prom by Making Faces and Sounds

April 10, 2018 11:28 AM EDT When Cardi B first appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last year, the late night funnyman was rendered speechless by Cardi’s gregarious enthusiasm, much to the delight of his fans. On Monday night, however, Cardi returned to The Tonight Show as not just a guest, but as the show’s first co-host. During her time with Fallon, the Invasion of Privacy rapper proved to be a charming co-host, which might have been most fittingly demonstrated when she helped to interview comedian John Mulaney, which led to an anecdote about her prom that consisted of almost no storytelling and all monosyllabic answers and meaningful looks. Carol and The Price of Salt: True History Behind the Story

In December 1948, Patricia Highsmith—then twenty-seven years old and fetching in an offbeat style, razor thin, tall, usually dressed in a white Oxford shirt from Brooks Brothers—was working as a temporary salesclerk in the toy department at Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan. It was a rather bleak day, with showers making the mild temperatures less pleasant. In any case, it was a day that she would never forget. A tall blonde woman in her late thirties, reeking of class, wearing a mink coat, approached the counter to inquire about a toy for her daughter. [Read More]

Counting Down New Years Eve: Whos in it the Most?

A few weeks ago I was walking along a New York subway platform when I noticed the movie poster for Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve. It’s the follow-up (same director, same writer, same producers) to 2010 Valentine’s Day. Both are pretty much the same film, a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Holiday minus the mad-cap. Star-stuffed and ostensibly full of good cheer, the pair are actually extremely cynical — “If we just put a ton of actors on screen, and then tie them all together with a holiday conceit and then put all their names on a poster, people will just come, right?
